The
Mason Perkins Deafness Fund
was established in 1985 with funds from the trust of American
philanthropist and art collector Mason Perkins, who lived in Assisi for many
years until his death. In his will, he bequeathed a portion of his estate to
help future generations of 'disadvantaged' Italian children. MPDF is one
of the grantees.
Producing a positive environment for the deaf and
deafblind children of Italy is the prime objective of the Mason Perkins
Deafness Fund.
We work to strengthen the support network around the deaf and deafblind child
through professional training and production of teaching materials and to create
a more optimistic environment by focusing on their potential rather than their
deafness. This is achieved through:
-
Intensive
courses for all categories of professionals who work with deaf and deafblind children
-
Production
of specialized teaching materials
-
Applied
linguistic research and the creation of sign language dictionaries
-
Translation
and adaptation, into Italian, of important books in the field of deaf
education
-
Promotion
and dissemination of Italian Sign Language and bilingual education methods
for deaf and deafblind children
-
Information
service for the general public
